The Tulare County Asthma Coalition has had some wonderful opportunities to work on policy. Our organization participated in supporting Measure R, a half cent transportation tax for Tulare County. This tax includes money to be available to improve air quality by synchronizing traffic lights to decrease idling, improving and creating additional bike paths throughout the county, and incorporating more walking trails. The coalition participated in community campaign planning meetings, passed out fliers, secured supporters and provided the public with air quality health impact information.
This measure passed in the November elections. Since it has been approved the coalition is working on the air quality portions. We are on the bicycle advisory committee to assure the money is spent on improving our air quality and decrease the amount of triggers for asthma. It is important to not only support and pass a measure but to follow through to assure it completes the intended needs.
The Tulare County Asthma Coalition continues to support bills that improve our air quality. As a member of the Central Valley Air Quality Coalition, we support improvements to the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District. We support bills going through legislation the decrease asthma triggers. The coalition is actively involved in the community and concerned with improving health related to asthma.
