Reports: Indoor Air and Homes
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene released the report. NYC Vital Signs, Pests Can Be Controlled…Safely, December 2005 Volume 4, No.3 which shows that pest infestation is far more common in low-income communities and communities of color than in other communities in the city. The report also finds that people with rampant infestations or disrepair in their homes are 1.5 to 2 times more likely to have an inhabitant with asthma. The report can be viewed at http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/downloads/pdf/survey/survey-2005pest.pdf.

The Fifth Avenue Committee in conjunction with an immigrant worker organization called La Union de la Communidad Latina recently released a Health and Housing Report, which focuses on housing conditions for low-income renters in the Sunset Park neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. It highlights the combined health impact of lack of health coverage in this community and problems in code enforcement design, reporting, and enforcement, and makes recommendations for change. This report can be viewed at http://www.citylimits.org/images_pdfs/pdfs/healthandhousingreport.pdf.
