In 2002, the Childhood Asthma Initiative, a project of the California Department of Health Services, conducted a study led by the Environmental Health Investigations Branch to assess asthma-related environmental practices in licensed child care centers and asthma awareness among child care staff. Surveys were mailed to 1,250 randomly selected California licensed child care centers. Site directors were asked about the presence of items that can trigger asthma at their site as well as their experience with children with asthma. Site directors were asked to distribute surveys to three child care staff members. Staff surveys assessed asthma knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs.
