Paper in Health Affairs by Bell and Standish about community capacity building and local policy changes to address determinants of health (asthma and obesity as examples)
Bell J and Standish M.
2005.
Perspective: Communities and Health Policy: A Pathway for Change.
Health Affairs, 24 (2): 339-342.

This article discussess how a focus on community-- capacity building for informed involvement in decision making processes-- and prevention-oriented local policy changes can work over the long term to reduce health disparities by positively changing determinants of health, like reducing or eliminating exposure to environmental asthma triggers. The article uses examples from California about asthma (CAFA Initiative) and overweight/obesity (healthy foods access).
