Study in Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology on new student and parent asthma symptom surveys
The following is a summary of the full press release available at:
http://www.acaai.org/Member/Membership/School+Screening+Study.htm

School children can be screened for asthma and respiratory allergies using a simple questionnaire. A study validating a student questionnaire – and an alternative questionnaire for parents – has been reported in the July 2004 issue of the Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

The project to develop a school-based asthma and allergy screen was started four years ago. Four pilot projects (Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Rochester, MN) were completed during the school year ending in June 2001, and their results published later that year. The ACAAI then asked the directors of the four pilot projects to collaborate on a one-page questionnaire for students and one for parents, based on what was learned in the four pilot projects. The collaborative study, completed in the school year ending in June 2003, documents the feasibility and validity of using a questionnaire for identifying undiagnosed childhood asthma and respiratory allergies.

The study showed that either a nine-item student questionnaire, answered by 7-13 year olds (K-6th grade), or a 10-item parent questionnaire can be used in diverse school settings to screen for asthma and respiratory allergies. The student questionnaire proved to be a somewhat more sensitive indicator of asthma and allergies than the one completed by the parents.

The ACAAI will be hosting a national conference in fall 2004 to determine ways to introduce and encourage adoption of the new screening instruments to schools across the country, and to address strategies for getting a professional diagnosis and treatment to children who screen positive for asthma or respiratory allergies.

The questionnaires are both available online at:
