Reducing Gang Violence, Reducing Asthma Triggers
In Oxnard, a recent gang injunction has inspired conversation about health implications of the threat of violence in a neighborhood. The La Colonia community, which hosts nearly 600 asthma patients, was also found to be victim to over one hundred incidents of gang violence. Parents reported not feeling comfortable letting their children play outdoors, and medical specialists such as Dr. Howard Spivak of Tufts University claim that limiting the children to indoor activity both increases their exposure to indoor allergens and promotes a sedentary lifestyle.
