The sales taxes now used by many local jurisdictions foist costs - in many cases the cost of transporting goods to people outside the region - onto taxpayers who derive absolutely nothing from them. Some of the costs are paid out of that sales tax; some in commute time; some in the swelling respiratory disease rates generated by the NOX and particulates from the trucks and dirty railroad diesels that move the stuff.
