This study included examination of the potential effect of two different vaccination series (DPPT, MMR) on the incidence of doctor-diagnosed asthma among children born in West Midlands, England during 1988-99. The incidence of doctor-diagnosed asthma in this study population was 3814 of 23483 (16.2%, or 4.9 per 100 person-years) and 1753 of 16470 (10.6%, or 2.5 per 100 person-years) in the DPPT and MMR analyses, respectively. However, associations between either vaccination series and doctor-diagnosed asthma were discovered in statistical analyses to be significantly explained by the lowest numbers of doctor visits (0-3 in first six months if DPPT analyses, 0-6 in first 18 months if MMR analyses) compared to more doctor visits. Therefore, the authors stated their data suggested current recommended pediatric vaccinations did not present a risk for development of asthma. |
