Study: Prevalence of Multiple Chemical Sensitivities
Caress SM and Steinemann AC. 2004.
Prevalence of Multiple Chemical Sensitivities: A Population-Based Study in the Southeastern United States.
American Journal of Public Health (AJPH), 94 (5): pp. 746-747.

An article in the May 2004 issue of the American Journal of Public Health reported on a survey conducted with a randomly selected sample of 1582 adult respondents from metropolitan Atlanta, GA. 12.6% of respondents said, compared with other people, they had unusual sensitivity to common chemical-based products (multiple chemical sensitivity, or MCS). The authors stated their figure was similar to the MCS prevalence found by the CA Dept. of Health Services among California adults (15.9%).

An interesting finding was among the 199 people in metropolitan Atlanta who reported having MCS, about 3 in 10 also reported having doctor-diagnosed asthma. Possible connections, however, were not presented. To view the article, click on the following link http://www.ajph.org/cgi/reprint/94/5/746.
