Personal exposure to nitrogen dioxide and the severity of virus-induced asthma in children.
Lancet, 361 (9373): pp.1939-1944.
This study of 114 British asthmatic children 8-11 years old reported higher personal exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the week before a reported upper respiratory tract viral infection, yet below current outdoor air quality standards for NO2, was statistically significantly associated with a reduction in peak expiratory flow (PEF, which was measured daily). Reduced PEF can indicate the severity of an asthma episode.
Please note personal exposure includes time spent outdoors as well as indoors at home and at school, and time in transit. |
