Study: Asthma Risk among Adolescents and Swimming in Chlorinated Pools
In an article published in the October 2008 edition of the European Respiratory Journal, researchers examined the risks related to exposure to indoor chlorinated swimming pools and the effect on the airways of swimmers and increased asthma risk and also looked at whether there were risks associated with exposure to outdoor pools. The study examined 847 secondary school adolescents and assessed their exposure to indoor and outdoor pools and also their asthma risk. Findings showed that the prevalence of ever having asthma and a current asthma diagnosis significantly increased with the lifetime number of hours spent in outdoor pools among adolescents who had spent the greatest amount of time in outdoor pools and had a low exposure to indoor pools. The authors concluded that outdoor chlorinated swimming pool use is associated with higher risks of asthma, airways inflammation and some respiratory allergies.
