GENERAL

1) Event: CDC Asthma Teleconference, August 12th

There is a CDC asthma teleconference scheduled for August 12th from 12pm until 1pm Pacific Time. The overall presentation topic is “The BRFAA Asthma Call-Back Survey: Getting our Feet Wet with the Data”. Asthma epidemiologists in the state health departments of Michigan, Minnesota, and New York, among other states, have been working with their asthma call-back data and this is an opportunity for these three states to share their approaches, demonstrate what they have done, and get feedback. The speakers and the titles of their presentations are as follows: Trang Nguyen, MD, DrPH and Melissa Lurie, MPH, New York State Department of Health, “Data Quality Control of the BRFSS Asthma Call-Back Survey Data”; Wendy Brunner, MS, Minnesota Department of Health, “Defining Current Asthma and Work-Related Asthma”; Betsy Wasilevich, PhD, MPH, Michigan Department of Community Health, “Measuring Asthma Control”. 2) Event: National Healthy Homes Conference in Baltimore, September 15th

The 2008 National Healthy Homes Conference – Building a Framework for Healthy Housing will take place in Baltimore from September 15th through 17th. This conference will gather a broad community of experts to discuss regulatory, policy, research, and outreach needs and their implications in the development of comprehensive, integrated approaches linking health and housing to ensure safe, healthy, and efficient housing. The conference will focus on key themes such as: building capacity to deliver healthy housing; mainstreaming healthy housing principles, creating healthy housing through research; developing enforcement and regulatory strategies; marketing healthy housing; and educating the public and practitioner. 3) Resource: Wildfire Smoke Guide from California Breathing

The California Department of Public Health has recently revised their wildfire smoke resource, “Wildfire Smoke: A Guide for Public Health Officials”. This guide is useful for anyone who works with people with asthma and includes current information on smoke behavior, respiratory protection, use of air cleaners and air conditioning, an explanation of how to align public health interventions with estimated or measured levels of particles, resources, information on building HVAC use, mask use, ash clean-up, setting up a cleaner air shelter, and model air quality alert PSAs. NORTHERN CALIFORNIA

4) Event: Breathe Well, Live Well Asthma Management Program Offered in Napa, August 16th

The American Lung Association of California, Queen of the Valley Hospital and North Bay Allergy and Asthma Clinic in Napa have teamed up to offer a free asthma management program for adults on Saturday, August 16th from 9am until noon at the Queen of the Valley Community Outreach Department (3448 Villa Lane, Suite 102 in Napa). The program, the American Lung Association’s Breathe Well, Live Well program, covers six major topics on asthma care and treatment. The topics include understanding asthma and how it affects breathing, getting help from your health care providers, learning about asthma-control medications, learning how asthma relates to other health conditions, finding your asthma triggers, tracking your symptoms, and making an asthma action plan. 5) Event: Health Impact Assessment Training in Oakland, September 15th

Human Impact Partners, CCISCO, and PODER are hosting a Health Impact Assessment (HIA) training for community advocates on September 15th and 16th in Oakland. Health Impact Assessment is a combination of procedures, methods, and tools by which a policy or project may be judged as to its potential effects on the health of a population, and the distribution of those effects within the population. The training is designed for community organizers, representatives of neighborhood organizations, community leaders, and worker advocates who are interested in using Health Impact Assessment in their advocacy efforts. This is a two-day training and topics covered include: connections between land use policies, plans, or development projects and health; issues that can be addressed by the HIA approach; intervention points in the land use planning process; advocacy strategies; how to do a HIA; and working with additional stakeholders. CENTRAL CALIFORNIA

6) Event: Central Valley Clean Air Action Day, August 20th

The Central Valley Air Quality (CVAQ) Coalition is organizing their Annual Clean Air Action Day to take place on Wednesday, August 20th. This is an opportunity to take a free trip to the Capitol to educate decision makers about the air quality related issues that are faced in the San Joaquin Valley and offer ideas for solutions. The bus will make stops in Bakersfield, Delano, Fresno, Madera, and Merced before heading to Sacramento – once in Sacramento there will be lunch, a rally at the Capitol, and meetings with legislators before heading back home. 7) Fellowship Opportunity: IDEAL Class Accepting Applications

The Great Valley Center is recruiting candidates for the 2009 class of the Institute for the Development of Emerging Area Leaders (IDEAL). The IDEAL program is targeted to emerging leaders from underrepresented and rural communities by taking a unique, issues based approach to fostering diverse and collaborative community leadership in the Central Valley. This program brings together a diverse group of twenty community volunteers and leaders to address a wide variety of issues important to the people of the Central Valley. In each of the seminars, IDEAL Fellows will work with experts, exploring issues important to the region through presentations, field studies, small-group discussions, and group activities. The next IDEAL class will run from January to June 2009 and will meet for monthly three-day seminars. The deadline for applications is October 3rd. 8) Job Announcement: MMCAC seeks Community Liaison

The Merced/Mariposa County Asthma Coalition (MMCAC) seeks a bilingual (English/Spanish) full-time Community Liaison for their office in Merced. Responsibilities include: assisting MMCAC staff with recruitment, training, support, and retention of volunteer MMCAC members, recruiting and organizing South Merced residents, serving as a resource and referral source on health and community related issues in the South Merced area, developing and implementing asthma public education and awareness activities, and assisting with data collection and management of data on asthma incidence and environmental risk factors. Additional qualifications include knowledge of: the community of South Merced, other communities within Merced and Mariposa counties, coalitions and/or collaborative projects, and community organizing.
