GENERAL

1) Event: CARB Public Workshops on the Statewide Truck and Bus Regulation

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is hosting a series of public workshops on the proposed regulation to reduce emissions from existing diesel-fueled on-road vehicles operating in the State. This will be the last series of workshops before the proposed regulation will be considered by the Board in October. At the workshops, CARB staff plans to provide an overview of the proposed regulation and to discuss the associated costs and emissions benefits. Daytime workshops will be held in San Diego, El Monte, Redding, San Jose, Sacramento, and Fresno. Evening workshops will be held in El Centro, Redding, San Jose, Riverside, and Arvin. For more information, visit http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/onrdiesel/workshops.htm.

2) Funding Opportunity: U.S. EPA Region 9 Indoor Air Program Request for Proposals

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region 9 (which includes California) has released a request for proposals. The EPA, Region 9 is soliciting proposals for projects addressing three indoor air priority areas: improving indoor air quality in schools, reducing exposure to indoor asthma triggers in homes, indoor asthma trigger management education in schools. Proposal may address more than one area. The total amount anticipated to be awarded under this RFP is approximately $115,000. Approximately three to four awards will be granted and awards will range from $15,000 to $60,000 with each project being two years. For more information, visit http://www.epa.gov/region09/funding/indoor-environments.html

3) Study: Uncontrolled Asthma and Missed Work and School

In a UCLA Health Policy Research Brief released in July, researchers used data from the 2005 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) to examine the burden associated with frequent asthma symptoms among those with current asthma. Researchers also identified key opportunities for reducing and controlling disease activity in these asthma sufferers. Findings showed that California children missed 1.9 million days of school because of asthma and adult workers missed 2 million days of work. In addition, 475,000 children and adults in California went at least once to the emergency department or urgent care center because of asthma. Based on the findings, recommendations for reducing the burden of asthma in California include improving access to quality care and controlling environmental factors.
