GENERAL
1) Funding Opportunity: Sierra Health Foundation Responsive Grants Program
The Sierra Health Foundation launched their Responsive Grants Program in June 2008. They have committed $2.4 million in funding over the next two years for nonprofit organizations and public agencies in their 26-county funding region. The goal of the program is to promote health and well-being. Sierra Health is asking nonprofit organizations and agencies to tell them what their community needs and concerns are, and how a grant can help. Responsive grants up to $40,000 will support projects in three broad funding areas: Expanding Health Insurance, Improving Health Care Access, and Promoting Health. Of the $1.2 million available in 2008, 30% will be available to projects serving rural areas in the funding region and 70% will be available to projects serving urban areas and/or rural areas. Applications are due by noon on August 15th. For more information, visit http://www.sierrahealth.org/doc.aspx?129.
2) Resource: Kaiser Permanente Adult Asthma Video Available
Kaiser Permanente has recently released an adult asthma video. It can be accessed on-line at
http://www.permanente.net/homepage/kaiser/pages/f56368.html. The video will be available in DVD format at the end of June. For more information or to order a DVD when it becomes available, contact Dorian Williams at 510-987-3489 or via e-mail at dorian.n.williams@kp.org.
3) Event and Scholarship Opportunity: ACCP Asthma and COPD Coalitions Symposium
The American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) has invited members of asthma and COPD coalitions to attend the 10th Annual ACCP Community Asthma and COPD Coalitions Symposium on October 29th and 30th during CHEST 2008 in Philadelphia. The highlights of the Symposium include: the Asthma in American Cities Project, How to Reduce Exposure to Environmental Tobacco Smoke, Developing State Plans and Coalitions for COPD, and How to Reach Local Media. ACCP has secured funding to provide travel scholarships to a limited number of asthma and COPD coalitions. Visit http://www.calasthma.org/news/show_story/584/ to access the travel scholarship application.
4) Study: Effects of Prenatal and Lifetime Exposures to Air Pollution and Pulmonary Function
In an article in the July 2008 edition of the journal Epidemiology, researchers examined the association of prenatal and lifetime exposures to air pollutants with pulmonary function in a cohort of children with asthma. Prenatal and lifetime exposure to several air pollutants were assessed for 232 children with asthma from the San Joaquin Valley of California. The results showed that prenatal and early life exposures to PM10, nitrogen dioxide, and carbon monoxide had a negative effect on pulmonary function in subgroups of asthmatic children. 5) Study: Wheeze and Asthma in Children and Associations with Television Viewing
In an article published in the May 27th on-line edition of the journal Epidemiology, researchers analyzed the relationship of body mass index (BMI), regular sports participation, TV viewing, and diet with current wheezing and asthma. Information was gathered on 20,016 children aged 6-7 years. The results showed that wheeze or asthma was not associated with regular sports activity and that subjects who spent five or more hours per day watching television were more likely to experience wheeze or current asthma compared with those who viewed TV less than one hour a day. The authors concluded that high body weight, spending a lot of time watching television, and a salty diet each independently increase the risk of asthma symptoms in children. 6) Funding Opportunity: RAMP Legacy Projects
The Regional Asthma Management and Prevention Initiative (RAMP) has released a Request for Proposals (RFP) for Legacy Projects. Legacy Project proposals should be focused on reducing asthma disparities in African American and Latino communities by addressing social determinants of health and by using a public health prevention approach. Priority will be given to proposals that are in alignment with the work of RAMP’s four goal areas to address asthma in African American and Latino communities. The goals are to reduce environmental triggers in homes, reduce environmental triggers and improve education and management of asthma in schools and childcare settings, reduce environmental triggers in the outdoor air with a focus on diesel pollution, and improve culturally competent clinical management. Priority will also be given to proposals that are for community efforts that take place within the nine Greater Bay Area counties, are new projects, can be implemented and reported on during the one year award period, include a proposed level of collaboration among diverse constituents and the involvement of community members in project activities, are part of a strategy working towards systems change as a long-term outcome, and do not conflict with or replicate existing RAMP work. Funding will be for one-year grants and it is anticipated that up to 3 awards, ranging from $25,000 - $30,000 each, will be granted. Applications must be received by July 1st. To access the RFP, visit http://www.calasthma.org/news/show_story/576/.
*NOTE: A change was made to the budget requirements, it is no longer required that only 50% of the budget be allocated for personnel costs. Please make budget changes according to your needs.
