1) Call for Nominations: National Asthma Educator Certification Board members
The National Asthma Educator Certification Board (NAECB) has supported the asthma education certification since the exam was first offered in September 2002. As part of the success of the Board, the Nominating Committee must ensure that each director position is filled and must develop and present a list of nominees to the entire Board for a vote. The NAECB is looking for assistance in identifying individuals that would be an asset to the Board of Directors. Individuals must be able and willing to serve on the Board of Directors, be dedicated to quality in asthma education, and must submit a completed application packet. The Board is looking for healthcare professionals and other individuals interested/involved in asthma education and is in particular need of a registered nurse, a registered respiratory therapist, and a 1000-hour asthma educator. The nomination form can be accessed by visiting http://www.naecb.org/documents/call4nom08_001.doc - applications are due no later than July 1st.
2) Resource: Indoor Air Quality Scientific Findings Resource Bank
The Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Scientific Findings Resource Bank (IAQ-SFRB) is being developed by the Indoor Environment Department of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory with funding support from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency provided through an interagency agreement. The IAQ-SFRB serves as a resource for public health professionals, building professionals, and others who seek scientific information about the effects of IAQ on people's health or work performance. The IAQ-SFRB provides information summarizing the state of scientific knowledge about the relationships between people's health and productivity and the IAQ conditions or associated building characteristics in which the people work or reside. The site also provides links for downloading published journal articles that were developed specifically for the IAQ-SFRB project. All of the information provided in the IAQ-SFRB has undergone review by multiple experts other than the authors. To access the IAQ-SFRB visit http://eetd.lbl.gov/ied/sfrb/.

3) Funding Opportunity: RAMP Legacy Projects - RFP Posted
*RAMP's Legacy Projects RFP has been posted. Please visit http://www.calasthma.org/news/show_story/576/ to access the information.
The Regional Asthma Management and Prevention Initiative (RAMP) will be releasing a Request for Proposals (RFP) for Legacy Projects on May 19th. Legacy Project proposals should be focused on reducing asthma disparities in African American and Latino communities by addressing social determinants of health and by using a public health prevention approach. Priority will be given to proposals that are in alignment with the work of RAMP’s four goal areas to address asthma in African American and Latino communities. The goals are to reduce environmental triggers in homes, reduce environmental triggers and improve education and management of asthma in schools and childcare settings, reduce environmental triggers in the outdoor air with a focus on diesel pollution, and improve culturally competent clinical management. Priority will also be given to proposals that are for community efforts that take place within the nine Greater Bay Area counties, are new projects, can be implemented and reported on during the one year award period, include a proposed level of collaboration among diverse constituents and the involvement of community members in project activities, are part of a strategy working towards systems change as a long-term outcome, and do not conflict with or replicate existing RAMP work. Funding will be for one-year grants and it is anticipated that up to 3 awards, ranging from $25,000 - $30,000 each, will be granted. Applications must be received by July 1st.

6) Event: APCD & CARB Local Workshop on 1B Grant Funding in El Centro, May 27th
The Imperial County Air Pollution Control District (APCD) in collaboration with the California Air Resources Board (ARB) is holding a public workshop to discuss the proposed regulation for In-Use On-Road Heavy-Duty Diesel-Fueled Vehicles and hear information on Prop 1B Grant funding availability. The workshop will take place on May 27th from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the El Centro Community Center located on 375 South 1st Street in El Centro. At the workshop ARB staff will discuss the proposed regulation that intends to reduce emissions from existing diesel-fueled trucks, buses, and other vehicles operating in the State. As currently proposed, the regulation would apply to nearly all in-use on-road heavy-duty diesel vehicles regardless of where the vehicle is registered. For more information, contact Matt Dessert at 760-482-4606.
7) Resource: Heber Tree Project in the Imperial Valley
The Clean Air Initiative is partnering with El Centro Regional Medical Center Asthma Program to coordinate the Heber Tree Project at schools in the Imperial Valley. The program being proposed will include an educational dramatization of what to do and not to do when someone is having an asthma episode, a lesson on the importance of trees on air quality, and conclude with a tree planting ceremony. This program will focus on the seventh and eighth grade students and educational packets on asthma and air quality will be given to the students and teachers. It is proposed that 15 trees will be donated to the school for the students to plant the day of this event. The American Lung Association recommends that low allergy trees be planted in order to avoid triggering asthma or allergy episodes. However, the choice of type of tree and location of trees is the choice of the school. For more information or to get your Imperial Valley school involved, please contact Monique Lopez at 760-355-8797.
