1) Events: Asthma Awareness Month Events taking place throughout California

May is Asthma Awareness Month and May 6th is recognized as World Asthma Day. RAMP has compiled a list of events taking place throughout the state in relation to these two outreach opportunities. Support your community by attending an event in your area! 2) Event: Seminar on Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality in New Homes in Sacramento, May 6th

The California Air Resources Board (ARB) Chair’s Seminar Series has announced their upcoming seminar on Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality in New Homes. The seminar will take place on May 6th in Sacramento from 1:30 – 3:30pm and the speaker will be Francis (Bud) Offermann, President of Indoor Environmental Engineering (the seminar will also be webcast). Mr. Offermann will present the results of the first major study of ventilation and indoor air quality (IAQ) in new homes in California. The goals of this field study were to measure, and analyze the relationships between, ventilation characteristics and IAQ in new, single-family detached homes in California. Mr. Offermann will discuss these results and their implications for building product selection, home design, and home operation. 3) Event: Webinar on using EPA’s HealthySEAT, May 21st

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is hosting a webinar on May 21st from 1:30 to 3:00 pm (Eastern Time) to teach participants how to download, install, customize, and use EPA’s free Healthy School Environments Assessment Tool (HealthySEAT). HealthySEAT is designed to help states, school districts and tribes create customized self-assessment checklists and track all school environmental health and safety conditions. 4) Event: Building Capacity to Eliminate Health Disparities Conference in Denver, June 26th

The Academy for Health Equity is hosting their inaugural founding conference on the topic of Building Capacity to Eliminate Health Disparities on June 26 and 27 in Denver. This conference is intended to build the knowledge base for those engaged in health disparity activities by facilitating trans-disciplinary translation exchanges of the latest research and practical applications. This will occur by increasing the capacity of participants to address complex health systems change, promoting the application of evidence-based, theory-driven findings of disease prevention and health promotion, identifying gaps in knowledge and data of the broad spectrum of causal factors of health disparities, and applying the latest theories, principles, programs, and practices to improving health literacy, cultural competency, and health communications programs. 5) Funding Opportunity: California Breathing Strategic Plan Implementation Grants

California Breathing has announced the release of the 2008-2009 funding cycle for the Strategic Plan Implementation Grants program. The purpose of these grants is to stimulate and augment projects that can reduce asthma disparities, and advance the goals and objectives outlined in the newly released Strategic Plan for Asthma in California – 2008-2012. Awards will focus on outdoor environments, housing, and community engagement in local policy development. Any organization committed to the goal of reducing disparities among communities that experience a disproportionate burden of asthma in California is encouraged to apply. Six to eight grants will be awarded, ranging from $25,000-$30,000 each, and covering a 16 month period. The deadline to apply is June 9th. The RFA and application forms will be available on the California Breathing website (http://www.californiabreathing.org) as of May 6th.

6) Award Opportunity: Haagen-Smit Clean Air Award Nominations

Nominations are being accepted for the California Air Resources Board (ARB) 2008 Haagen-Smit Award to recognize nominee’s dedicated air quality efforts during his/her career. The ARB annually presents the award to esteemed persons in the air quality community – scientists, professors, legislators, activists, business leaders, and others who have made significant contributions toward improving air quality and public health. 7) Resource: Strategic Plan for Asthma in California - 2008-2012

The California State Asthma Steering Committee has announced the release of the State Department of Public Health’s new five-year Strategic Plan for Asthma in California – 2008-2012. The Plan provides innovative and proven strategies to improve the health and quality of life of the over five million Californians affected by asthma. The Plan highlights five cross-cutting priorities for action: eliminating asthma disparities; providing education and awareness; focusing on asthma across the lifespan; creating institutional and systems change; and promoting effective asthma policies. These priorities are addressed under five Plan goal areas: Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation; Surveillance and Research; Health Care; Indoor Environments; and Outdoor Environments. 8) Resource: Database of State Indoor Air Quality Laws

The Environmental Law Institute has a Database of State Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Laws is available to access for free on their website. The database includes state laws that have been enacted through December 2007. There are also reports that focus specifically on the subjects of radon, schools, and mold. 10) Events: ALA "Breathe Well, Live Well" classes in Redwood City and Daly City

The American Lung Association (ALA) is sponsoring “Breathe Well, Live Well” asthma classes for adults in conjunction with Health Plan of San Mateo. The classes are free to all and include a $30 incentive gift card for participants who attend. Classes are offered in English on May 8th and May 24th and in Spanish on May 7th. Responsibilities of the Environmental Health Director include providing overall management of the environmental health programming of the organization and the Environmental Health staff, working with the Executive Director to chart the future goals and direction of the organization, and much more.
