GENERAL
1) Event: CDC Asthma Teleconference, April 8th
There is a CDC asthma teleconference scheduled for April 8th from 12pm until 1pm Pacific Time. The call will feature Dr. Nancy Brener and the presentation topic is “Findings from the School Health Policies and Programs Study 2006”. Dr. Brener is the Team Lead for Surveillance Research in the Division of Adolescent and School Health, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. She is responsible for overseeing the Division’s surveillance systems, including the School Health Policies and Programs Study, the School Health Profiles, and the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System. 2) Events: CPEHN’s Spring Convening Series
The California Pan-Ethnic Health Network’s (CPEHN) spring Convening Series, “The Path to Healthy Communities: Place Based Solutions to Achieving Health Equity” is currently underway. The convening will bring local advocates, community leaders, and public health experts into the same room to explore how policy can improve the conditions of where we work and live. The convening agenda will include the following: a screening of the documentary “Unnatural Causes…Is Inequity Making Us Sick?”, group discussions to indentify policy solutions and next steps for advocacy work, presentations from policy experts and local advocates on current policy activity, and a call to action. Convenings will take place in Fresno on April 9th, Oakland on April 15th, and Los Angeles on April 28th. CPEHN is partnering with the California Black Health Network (CBHN) and Fresno Works for Better Health Advocacy Center to support this convening. 3) Funding Announcement: West Coast Collaborative Diesel Emissions Reduction Program
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Regions 9 and 10 (which includes California) – through the West Coast Collaborative - have announced the availability of approximately $5.1 million to deploy EPA or CARB verified or certified technologies to significantly reduce diesel emissions. Proposals are due July 1st. EPA Regions 9 and 10 anticipate awarding six to nine assistance agreements from this announcement, with awards ranging from $500,000 to $1,000,000. 4) Resource: National Healthy Schools Day plans
The Healthy Schools Network has a website for National Healthy Schools Day to assist in planning an event to celebrate healthy school facilities for all children. National Healthy Schools Day is April 28th and on the website there are examples for events, event guidelines, information on past events, and an opportunity to connect with partners. 5) Job Announcement: DDDC seeks part-time Collaborative Associate
The Ditching Dirty Diesel Collaborative (DDDC), a regional alliance of Bay Area grassroots community based organizations, labor, environmental science, and public health organizations working to reduce diesel pollution in low-income communities of color, seeks an experienced consultant to serve as the Collaborative Associate. This is a part-time position and hours are expected to range between 10 and 16 per week. The Associate will serve as staff to the DDDC and will work closely with the steering committee and general membership to manage and maintain the DDDC’s position within the Bay Area and at the state level as a leader in diesel reduction and air quality improvements. The position is a combination of administrative, programmatic, development, and technical assistance activities that support the DDDC’s mission and goals. 6) Job Announcement: Peninsula Family Advocacy Program seeks Project Coordinator
The Peninsula Family Advocacy Program (FAP), a collaborative project between the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, and the Ravenswood Family Health Center in East Palo Alto, seeks a Project Coordinator. The FAP strives to improve the health and welfare of low income children and their families by providing free legal services directly within these health centers, training health care providers to identify their patients’ legal needs, and addressing policy issues that impact children’s health. The Project Coordinator manages the FAP and ensures the program meets its goals. The Project Coordinator coordinates hospital and clinic based legal services for low-income families and data collection for ongoing research study. Other responsibilities include coordination of volunteer activities; healthcare provider training; and program evaluation. Oral and written Spanish proficiency is required.
