Objectives:
• Participants will gain a deeper understanding about the connections between housing and health, specifically asthma
• Participants will gain a better understanding of housing in the Bay Area, including affordable housing options and tenants’ rights
• Participants will learn more about advocacy strategies, techniques, tools and resources to improve housing and health, especially at the system- and institutional- level
• Bay area housing and asthma advocates will start to connect and share resources in hopes of integrating affordable housing and asthma and other health related public health efforts
Context:
Housing and the quality of our housing significantly impact our health. Poor housing conditions can lead to a wide range of health problems, including asthma, lead poisoning, and stress. The US Environmental Protection Agency consistently ranks indoor air pollution among the top five risks to public health. Additionally, the limited supply of affordable housing in the Bay Area forces many families into crowded or substandard conditions. This reality, coupled with a lack of renter protections in many cities, deters families from reporting poor conditions for fear of eviction.
Housing quality not only affects individual health, but community heath. Without access to good, safe, and affordable housing near jobs and services, people are forced to commute long distances that contribute to air pollution, traffic, and sprawl. Also, lack of affordable housing forces many families into impossible economic choices between other necessities, such as transit, food, or medical care.
Although we have a lot of information about the connections between housing and health, it is rare for asthma, public health, and housing advocates to work together to share information and strategies. There are many innovative approaches to bridging the work between housing and health advocacy. We hope that this workshop is a stepping-stone and a starting point to creating a deeper understanding of the connections between our work in order to create strategic partnerships.
