| Asthma attack claims life of E.C. girl, 11 |
SAN DIEGO — An 11-year-old El Centro girl was pronounced dead on arrival at Children’s Hospital here Thursday nearly an hour and a half after suffering an asthma attack at the Denver C. Fox Outdoor School near Palomar Mountain.
According to Denver C. Fox public information officer Jim Esterbrooks, Virginia Sanchez, who was attending a sixth-grade camp with students from McCabe Union Elementary School, was said to have been suffering an asthma attack, then began choking shortly after 8 p.m.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s officer confirmed Virginia had an inset of wheezing, was given her inhaler, and then collapsed.
Other students in Virginia’s cabin alerted staff members and the outdoor school’s onsite registered nurse began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation after Virginia stopped breathing.
“Our (registered nurse) was right outside of the cabin and was in there in a matter of seconds,” Esterbrooks said, adding, the outdoor school has one onsite R.N. “She began performing CPR and really did everything she could before emergency services arrived.”
Esterbrooks said those onsite called 911 around 8:10 p.m. and an ambulance crew from the Santa Ysabel Fire Department arrived 10 minutes later. That crew was followed by emergency crews from the La Jolla Volunteer Fire Department and the California Department of Fire Prevention and Forestry.
At 8:45 p.m. Virginia was transported three miles to Lake Henshaw, from which she was flown to Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 9:30 p.m.
Calls to McCabe Principal Amanda Brooke were not returned Friday.
