| As State Law Kicks in, Cops Crack Down on Diesel Vehicles |
State inspectors, with the help of local police and the California Highway Patrol, are enforcing a new rule that prohibits diesel-fueled trucks from idling their engines for more than five minutes and buses for more than ten minutes. The rule, passed by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) last July, took effect on February 1, 2005. Long-haul truckers who sleep in their trucks are exempt from the time limit for now but must not idle their engines within 100 feet of a residence or a school. Drivers caught ignoring the rule could receive a citation that carries a minimum fine of $100 and one of a range of criminal penalties.
