On September 24, 2004, the California Air Resources Board unanimously adopted the first-ever rules in the nation to reduce car emissions linked to global warming.
The new regulations represent the implementation of California's Clean Car Law, AB 1493 (Pavley), which was adopted two years ago. CAFA joined other advocates to support this measure. See http://www.calcleancars.org/factsheets/ca_law.pdf.
The new standards will require automakers to cut carbon dioxide and other gas emissions by as much as 25 percent starting with the 2009 model year and increasing to as much as 34 percent in 2016. Though the cost of new cars in California could increase by approximately $3,000, smog-forming pollution is expected to see a reduction of about five tons per day by 2020.
