Mission
|
| Oakland/Berkeley Community Action to Fight Asthma (OB-CAFA), a project of the Ethnic Health Institute Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, seeks to reduce environmental asthma triggers for school-aged children in Oakland and Berkeley through local and regional policy/systems change. |
| |
|
Objectives
|
OB-CAFA advocates for “asthma-friendly” policies in schools and communities with a focus on improving classroom indoor air quality and reducing children’s exposure to diesel particulate matter.
1. By June 2008, support the passage and implementation of the Oakland Unified School District’s (OUSD) Wellness Policy as it relates to asthma and indoor air quality.
2. By June 2008, support the adoption of an asthma policy within the Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD).
3. By June 2008, implement current policy set forth by the Williams Settlement by piloting one school in OUSD and leveraging funds to repair school facilities in order to reduce environmental asthma triggers and improve indoor air quality.
4. By June 2008, through participation in the Ditching Dirty Diesel Collaborative (DDDC), work on the monitoring and enforcement of existing bus and truck idling regulations by conducting outreach to the public, drivers, and enforcement officers.
5. By June 2008, through participation in the Bay Area Environmental Health Collaborative (BAEHC), support the passage of policies/process for addressing cumulative impacts and disparities by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD).
