Asthma Coalition of Los Angeles County

Mission
The mission of the Asthma Coalition of Los Angeles County is to prevent and alleviate pediatric asthma by addressing environmental factors in the home that trigger the disease, and advocate for policies and practices that encourage reduction of in-door and out-door triggers. Because substandard housing conditions contribute to asthma triggers, we also work toward creating synergy between coalition members and housing advocates, and deliver tenant rights education.

Objectives
1. Case manage asthma patients

2. Educate families on disease management and trigger
abatement

3. Connect families with advocacy efforts and resources
for managing asthma

4. Protect tenants seeking repairs from eviction

5. Cultivate organizing / campaign consciousness among all
levels of asthma and housing staff

6. Raise lawmakers’ and housing industry awareness of
the asthma-housing connection; propose policy
solutions

7. Use outcome data, accounts from patients, clinicians,
and case managers to show cost savings realized by
prevention and health education over acute/chronic
care

8. Improve mechanisms for referrals and information
collection and exchange between clinical caregivers
and other service providers

Partners
The Asthma Coalition of Los Angeles County partners with many grass roots organizations, public health groups, and governmental agencies. One of the main research groups we collaborate with on air quality research is the Southern California Environmental Health Science Center (SCEHSC). Andrea Hricko and Rob McConnel are prominent expert in the environmental and public health movement and co-authored the well known asthma studies, “The Children’s Health Study” and “Breathless in Los Angeles: The Exhausting Search for Clean Air” published in the American Journal of Public Health.
