The projects described on this page were based on asthma hospitalization rate data provided by the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) for 1998-2000.
Two projects were produced by CAFA's State Coordinating Office:
I. Asthma hospitalization rates for “all ages” and children 0-14 years old by legislative district (LD). The figures (maps) and tables were released for World Asthma Day in early May. These maps and tables are also available as individual documents on the CAFA Internet site under “resources” (sort by clinical data) along with the science article appearing in the spring 2004 CAFA newsletter (no. 1).
II. Asthma hospitalization rates by zip code tabulation areas (ZCTAs) for “all ages” and children 0-14 years old. The analyses, in figures (maps, graphs) and tables, were released June 2004.

The Foreword, the Table of Contents and Lists of Figures and Tables appear below. Due to the size of each of the files, CAFA cannot post the report on this website. However, for a CD copy of this valuable resource book for your organization, please contact RAMP, coordinator for the CAFA network, (510) 302-3365 or by e-mail, info@rampasthma.org. We can likely provide one copy per community-based organization, agency, or local health department (but feel free to make your own CD copies and share with your staff!).

FOREWORD
By the CAFA State Coordinating Office staff
The following information is intended as a tool for asthma advocacy for Local Coalitions and Regional Centers of the Community Action to Fight Asthma. Three-year averaged hospitalization rates, along with confidence intervals, have been calculated using data from the Office of Statewide Healthcare Planning and Development (OSHPD) from the years 1998-2000.
For each of 15 counties, hospitalization rates were calculated at the level of the Zip Code Tabulation Area, or ZCTA. These areas are used by the U.S. Bureau of the Census and correspond, in many cases precisely, to the Zip Codes used by the U.S. Postal Service. Note, however, the ZCTAs are matched to the zip codes in use in the year 2000. If zip codes in your county have been consolidated or subdivided since 2000, this will not be reflected in the tables, graphs, or maps.
All rates are age-adjusted, so comparisons can be made between ZCTAs and counties in this booklet. Hospitalization rates were not calculated for ZCTAs with fewer than five hospitalizations.
Please contact the CAFA state office if you need assistance in the interpretation or summary of these data for specific purposes. Also contact us if you need any of the enclosed maps as picture (“JPEG” or “bit map”) files. Finally, we recommend reading the CAFA User Guideline on OSHPD data for a thorough introduction to these data if you have not done so previously.
